NSE Q2 Profit Jumps 23% to ₹2,578 Crore in First Results Since Listing; Options Trading Volumes Fall 25%
NSE reports a 23% rise in Q2 profit to ₹2,578 crore in its first post-listing results, while equity options trading volumes decline 25% sequentially.

India's biggest stock exchange reports its first post-listing quarterly results
The National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) has reported a 23% year-on-year increase in consolidated profit for the September 2026 quarter, marking its first quarterly earnings announcement since its stock market listing in September.
The exchange reported a consolidated profit of ₹2,578 crore, compared with ₹2,098 crore in the corresponding quarter last year. Revenue from operations also increased to ₹4,067 crore from ₹3,677 crore, reflecting stronger performance compared with the previous year.
However, the results also reveal a different picture when compared with the June quarter, as both revenue and profit declined sequentially amid changing trading activity in the derivatives market.
NSE Q2 FY27 results at a glance
Consolidated profit | Operating revenue | Equity options volume | Cash market volume |
|---|---|---|---|
₹2,578 Cr ▲ 23% YoY | ₹4,067 Cr ▲ 10.6% YoY | -25% Quarter-on-quarter | +24% Year-on-year |
Why did NSE's profit increase?
The improvement in NSE's annual earnings was supported by stronger activity in the cash equity market.
Average daily cash-market trading volumes increased 24% compared with the same quarter last year. This helped support the exchange's revenue growth despite changes in derivatives trading activity.
The results indicate that NSE continues to benefit from India's expanding equity participation, although different market segments are showing different trends.
Options trading slowdown raises questions
One of the most important developments in the results was the decline in equity options activity.
Average daily equity options volumes, measured by the premiums paid by traders to purchase contracts, declined 25% compared with the previous quarter.
The introduction of the Closing Auction Session (CAS) in August has been associated with increased end-of-day price volatility. This encouraged some intraday equity and options traders to reduce their activity.
Cash-market trading volumes also declined 13% sequentially, despite remaining higher year-on-year.
What does this mean for investors?
NSE's results highlight an important trend in India's financial market: growth in overall stock market participation does not necessarily mean every trading segment will expand at the same pace.
The exchange's market position, increasing retail participation and growth in cash equities remain important business drivers. At the same time, derivatives volumes, regulatory developments and technology-related revenue will be key factors to monitor.
For investors, the next few quarters will help establish whether the decline in options activity is temporary or signals a longer-term change in trading behaviour.
Indian market outlook: A cautious start on Wednesday
The broader market also faces some external uncertainty today. GIFT Nifty indicated a weaker opening for Indian equities on November 4, while Brent crude traded near $103 per barrel. Investors are also monitoring the outcome of the US midterm elections.
This follows four consecutive sessions of gains, during which the Sensex and Nifty advanced around 5%.
StockVirtue takeaway
NSE's first post-listing quarterly results present a mixed but important picture. A 23% annual profit increase demonstrates continued earnings strength, while the decline in options trading highlights changing market activity.
Investors should watch upcoming exchange results, derivatives volumes and regulatory developments to understand the direction of India's trading ecosystem.
